Eliza Wright's

Skye-Inspired Embroidery

This site shows some examples of my embroidered pictures that are not cross stitch. All of them involve nature in some way, from the whole landscape to tiny flowers and mosses. All seasons are here - and every mood from calm serenity to violent storm. I live on this island all the time. I don't retreat from the gales and rain. I watch the changing seasons constantly, enthralled by their contrasts and their unpredictability.

The pictures are made mostly using natural products and simple, easily obtainable threads like stranded cotton. A list of "ingredients" would probably go something like this: hand-painted silk, calico, cotton sateen, wool, throwsters waste (a waste product from silk manufacture), hand-dyed silk using environmentally safe dyes. The most exotic components are probably machine embroidery thread which tends to be made from rayon, metallic embroidery threads and beads.

I don't believe that the production of interesting and beautiful pictures requires the use of ever more complicated, esoteric substances or machines, though I confess to owning a sewing machine!

The pictures are mostly quite small. I enjoy creating things that you have to get up close and peer at. They're roughly divided into two groups, the first ones using a variety of techniques, and the second to silk shading. There is also a techniques section for those of you who would like some hints on how I do it, and a gallery of embroideries that are for sale.
